Every Student Sent!!!

This past month has been exciting, with our Every Student Sent conference that took place. This conference is targeted at soon to be graduating students, who are deciding what they want to do when they leave college. Most of them want to serve the Lord in their vocation, and this conference really speaks to students to motivate them to pursue God in the choices they make for their future. Roger Hershey was our speaker.

The first night of the conference, Roger talked about our expectations out of life, and having a proper biblical perspective on life. We can expect that because God loves us, we can trust him to provide and care for us. But in addition to this, because we live in a fallen world, we know that there will be some suffering, and there is a sacrifice required, and that we must yield our own rights. He talks about embracing the same attitude of sacrifice that Christ did.

The second session talked about decision making, and pursuing our callings in life. Hershey talked about our primary calling being to be submissive to the Lordship of Christ in our lives, and our secondary calling to be how we will serve him. Much of what he talked about was discovering what your specific gifts and talents and passions are, and using those to serve God.

The third session was about living with an eternal perspective. This life is not all there is. We talked about how fleeting life is, and how our citizenship is in heaven. We are told to set our mind on heavenly things. Many students are trying to decide whether to get jobs in the marketplace, or to pursue full time ministry. The question should be “Jesus, you are Lord of my life. Which way should I go?” God can and does use people in both ways, but we should be receptive to him, and how He may want to use us. Hershey painted a picture of what it will be like when Christ returns, and how much we have to look forward to that day. This is what we are living for, for Jesus, not the world’s approval.

The last thing we learned about was being good stewards of what God has given us. Hershey brought up the parable of the talents, and using what God has given us to serve him. He talked about the master (Jesus) going away, and the good servants were those who used what they were given to serve Him while he was gone. They were able to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We should desire above all else to please our Lord and Savior, and use what he has given us for His glory.

In addition Steve had a chance to meet with three students that were interested in learning more about serving God by working in operations with Campus Crusade, and he had a chance to fix a lot of comptuer problems that some of our staff, who usually are far away, were having. This was an awesome conference, and the students were challenged in their faith, and challenged to step out where they are and allow God to use them.

Making Cranes at IUPUI

There is a Japanese saying that if you make 1000 cranes you will be granted a wish for health or well-being. As one of our ways of showing support for what is happening in Japan, Appalachian State started a campaign to write prayers on 1000 pieces of origami paper, and to make those into cranes to send to show our Japanese friends affected by the recent tragedies there that we are praying for them and support them. Other campuses in the great lakes region are getting involved in this as well, and we made some cranes at IUPUI for Bridges. Here are some pictures of that.

February Letter Out

Wow, it has been really busy the last few months. I’ve been excited to be working with Bridges on Fridays, and their ministry to International Students on IUPUI’s Campus, but I have also been really busy with this conference season that we have, where we put on conferences for students in our region. Now it is starting to calm down a little, and we are going to be spending some time telling you guys about what we’ve been up to. In this letter we focus on Christmas Conference. As always click on the link for “Our Latest Newsletter” to read it.

Bridges Thanksgiving Dinner Tomorrow, many students coming!!!

Hi friends, this is something that is relatively new, and we will talk about it more in our letter, but right now I am helping out with something called Bridges at Indiana University /Purdue University – Indianapolis (IUPUI). Bridges is a ministry that seeks to help international students through service activities, social networking and spiritual resources. On IUPUI, 10% of the student body is international students, and one way that we have been serving them is by having a Bible Study on Fridays, followed by a Conversation Club, both of these providing them with an opportunity to learn about Christ while working on their English skills. In the past we have had about 20 students, many of whom are Asian, and non-Christian coming to our club and Bible study, which is something we are really excited about, however things are getting more exciting!!!

Tomorrow we are having a Thanksgiving Dinner at the time we usually meet, where we will be providing these international students with some of the food that we eat on Thanksgiving, and a chance to experience what  Thanksgiving is all about. We sent an e-mail to all the International Students at IUPUI (the university allowed us to use their e-mail list for this purpose). A short time later I was told that 50 students had e-mailed back to say they were coming!!! Right now we aren’t sure how many students will end up coming, but we are excited that we will have the chance to form relationships with a lot of new students. Please pray for everyone on staff who will be there tomorrow, that students will see through us what a life with Christ is like and find it irresistible, that we will form new friendships that will be impactful, and that the difference God has made in our lives will be unmistakable.

Karen and I are both eagerly looking forward to this opportunity to make new friends tomorrow, and eat a great Thanksgiving dinner!! Thank you for your prayers and support that allows us to serve here, we look forward to sharing more about how this day unfolds in our next letter.
